Spanish growers optimize margins with labour management systems

Fausto Ramirez

As margins and production costs of Spanish operations are increasingly under pressure, operators and managers in Almeria’s greenhouses are implementing new innovative technologies to gain insight and control over one of their largest cost-drivers; manual labour. Fausto Ramírez, account manager at Ridder Spain, sees a growing interest in solutions that can help growers manage their workers more efficient.

In Spain, many greenhouse operations are performing under their potential as the management of workers and the quality of work is not managed to it’s fullest potential. Workers and their productivity, quality and efficiency of the work is hardly tracked. According to Fausto this is a result of a strong focus on the production in the day-to-day management. ”The productivity and rentability of the operation is often based on the productivity of the crops; in terms of production per square meter or hectare. The costs that go into that production are not always monitored or managed well.

Fausto explains that growers often are not aware always familiar with the right solutions to improve the productivity of the workers. “We see that growers use traditional, time-consuming, methods for monitoring productivity and tracking work hours; most of them use general reporting based on manual notes, which are in some cases used in an excel spreadsheet. However, these methods have their limitations when it comes down to analyzing. And when you are collecting data without having the ability to analyzing it, if feels like a waste of time. This is what our solutions can solve.”

Ridder offers smart, time-saving digital solutions that allow growers to collect data and information related to production, worker-productivity, quality and even crop-health in a very efficient way. Our solutions portfolio is designed to fit the many different profiles of the businesses in this area; from small or traditional greenhouse companies with low levels of technology to more rigid greenhouse structures with more sophisticated technological infrastructure; we have worker and productivity management solutions available for every situation. All of them are designed to collect data in a secure and convenient way and helping you to increase worker productivity.

According to Fausto, managing labour and productivity starts with accurate registrations that can be used to gain insight in the performance ospecific activities. “Whether you use one of our mobile scanning solutions, mobile apps or fixed terminal systems in the greenhouse; it all comes down to collecting proper registrations and the right information that you can use to generate useful reports that will show you where you can make savings. Next to this the reports do not only allow you to save on cost of production, but also allow you to make a personal gain as a manager. You will gain more knowledge about your operation and the workforce, which will support your decision-making.”

In a recent article on the Spanish horticulture weblog joseantonioarcos.es, Fausto explains how one of Ridder’s customers in Almeria is optimizing the worker productivity using our labour management systems with Fixed Terminals. Next to this, Fausto also explains the potential of various alternative technologies such as Ridder’s scan app with NFC tags, Ridder’s team manager app. Next to this he also addresses the added value of tracking and tracing pests and diseases using a labour management system.
