Since 1 January 2018, Dutch greenhouse horticulture companies have been legally obliged to purify their residual water flows with certified water treatment systems. Paul Moerman of the Dalipa pepper nursery in Bleiswijk sees the importance of this general water purification requirement. “It’s a good thing for the image of the sector, although Dutch vegetable growers are already very environmentally conscious. I think that, certainly in comparison, we grow peppers in the most sustainable way possible.”

Dutch tomato grower Sweet Lions grows a large variety of specialty tomatoes on an acreage of 8 hectares. This cultivation is an extensive and labor-intensive crop with a variety of varieties, colors and processing procedures.

Mexican grower, Agrícola Oliveros, produces high quality specialty grape tomatoes mostly for the US market. It has 10 hectares of poly greenhouses and will soon expand by another five hectares. In 2014 it installed a Ridder HortiMaX CX500 climate control computer to automate the climate and irrigation systems. Owner Ernesto Oliveros says it revolutionized the irrigation system which is now based on the level of solar radiation.

The experimental research facility of Wageningen University in The Netherlands were expanded with a genuine Chinese Solar Greenhouse.
The passive Chinese solar greenhouse relies on solar radiation for its heating and it provides a minimally controlled growing environment. With one million hectares, this typical greenhouse is widely applied in China, which gives all reason for serious research on improvements for this low-tech greenhouse system.
As an answer to the growing demand of responsibly produced greenhouse grown cucumbers, Vine Fresh acres of Ruthven, Ontario, broke ground on a 12.5 acre greenhouse in August last year.
This 12.5 acre greenhouse currently is producing its first crop with high wire cucumbers that are sold under the Nature Fresh Farms brand. Head grower and operations manager Jake Neufeld of Vine Fresh Acres was so kind to tour us around their brand new operation.
